SHEPHERD SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR AT SNOWBIRD TOURNAMENT

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- Shepherd University dropped a pair of one-run games at the Snowbird Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Monday. Shepherd dropped a 3-2 decision to Gettysburg and fell in their second game to Arcadia, 6-5.

Shepherd opened the scoring in the first inning against Gettysburg when senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) was hit-by-pitch and later scored on a double off the bat of junior third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS).

Trailing 2-1 in the third, senior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) doubled and later scored on a single from freshman second baseman Rebekah Walsh (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) to tie the game at 2-2.

Katie Eiden reached base on a error and later scored on a single in the bottom the seventh to give the Bullets the win.

Sophomore outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) led the Rams with a 2-for-2 outing.

Ram starter Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) (0-3) took the loss, while Shannon Kiry gained the win for Gettysburg.

Amanda Celentano scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to score the eventual winning run and lift Arcadia to a 6-5 triumph over Shepherd in the second game.

The Knights took a 4-0 lead in the first with a six-hit attack before Shepherd answered back in the botom of the frame with a pair of runs as Canby tripled and scored on an inside-the-park homer from Zappacosta.

Arcadia increased its lead to 6-3 with single runs in the fourth and seventh.

Shepherd's comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh fell one run short. The Rams plated three runs with Griffin's two-run double keying the rally.

Ram starter Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) took the loss, while Kiersten Hughes picked up the win for Arcadia.

Shepherd (1-6) returns to action on Tuesday when they face Mansfield and Russell Sage in second day tournament action.
