SHEPHERD EDGES SALEM INTERNATIONAL

SALEM, WV -- Shepherd University edged Salem International, 3-2, in WVIAC softball at Salem on Tuesday afternoon. The second game was called due to rain with the score tied at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning.

Salem scored a run in the fourth when Amie Brown singled home Denell Gordon. The Tigers scored their final run in the seventh when Erin Anderson singled to plate C.J. Aichele.

Shepherd clinched the win with two unearned run sin the sixth. Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) reached base on an error, Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) walked, and both scored when the Salem third baseman misplayed a ball hit by Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS).

Zappacosta fanned two in the complete game win to improve to 7-5, while Kelly Wolke had three strikeouts in a losing cause for the Tigers.

Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) had a single for the Rams, while JoJo Small (Old Fields, WV/Frankfort HS) added a triple, and Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) stroked an RBI-triple in the fifth.

Shepherd moves to 16-19 overall, 9-6 in WVIAC action, while Salem falls to 17-15, 10-9. The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Ohio Valley for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
