SHIPPENSBURG SWEEPS SHEPHERD

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Shippensburg University swept Shepherd College, 8-3, 4-0, in doubleheader softball action at Shippensburg on Wednesday.

A five-run third inning for Shippensburg proved to be the difference in game one. The Lady Raiders used a six-hit attack for the scoring barrage.

Shepherd's scoring came on a two-run homer from Melanie Okun (Damascus/Damascus, MD) in the fourth and an RBI-single in the seventh by Mara Kafton (Martinsburg/Martinsburg, WV) to plate Christee Anderson (Martinsburg/Kearneysville, WV), who led off the inning with a double.

Anderson had eight strikeouts in a losing cause for the Rams, while Shippensburg hurler Dana Burgess had nine strikeouts en route to her second win of the year.

Kafton and Okun each had two hits to lead the Rams.

Amanda Collins and Anna Corr had a pair of hits each to pace Shippensburg.

Amanda Fleming (Hancock/Hancock, MD) singled with two outs in the seventh inning to break up a no-hit bid by Shippensburg's Lindsey Williams in the nightcap.

Beth Rudai, Sandy Smith, and Jamie Dacey had two hits each to lead the Lady Raiders.

Shepherd pitcher Becky Porter (James Buchanan/Chambersburg, PA) suffered her first loss of the year.

Shepherd falls to 9-8, while Shippensburg improves to 15-10. The Rams return home to face Western Maryland on Thursday. Doubleheader action will begin at 2:30 p.m.
