SHEPHERD SWEPT BY SHIPPENSBURG

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Shippensburg University swept Shepherd University in softball action at Shippensburg on Tuesday. The Red Raiders took game one with a 5-2 win and gained the sweep with a 9-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Shippensburg scored four runs on four hits in the fifth inning of game one to pull away for the victory.

Liz Corr and Fawn Gaidos had two hits each to pace Shippensburg. Ann Corr, Jamie Dacey, and Sarah Costa each drove in a run.

Six different players singled for the Rams. Junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) singled home junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) for Shepherd's first tally in the third. The Rams added a run in the sixth when freshman Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) singled and later scored on an infield error.

Shippensburg starter Caitlin Mac Pherson earned the win with reliever Danielle Shields working the seventh to pick up the save. Ram starter Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) took the loss.

Jessica Miller went 2-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored, while Ali Morris was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored to lead Shippensburg in the nightcap. Sarah Costa added a 1-for-4 performance with three RBI an a runs scored.

Sophomore third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) paced the Rams with a 3-for-3 outing.

Shepherd's only run came in the sixth when Zahnow reached base on an error and later scored on a single by sophomore Alyssa Rowe (Enhaut, PA/Central Dauphin East HS).

Jill Kirby fanned seven in six innings to gain the win for Shippensburg. Zappacosta took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd falls to 13-7, while Shippensburg improves to 26-1. The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Ohio Valley for a noon doubleheader.
