NO. 21 SHIPPENSBURG SWEEPS SHEPHERD SOFTBALL

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shippensburg University, ranked 21st nationally, swept Shepherd University in softball action at Shepherd on Wednesday afternoon with a pair of 10-0 victories.

Kelley Tiesl tossed a two-hitter and fanned 15 to lead Shippensburg in game one. Junior Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) (4-4) struck out a season-high nine in a losing effort for the Rams.

Stacy Stengl and Rachelle Wedell had two hits apiece to lead the Lady Raiders. Krystal Shannon went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

A single by senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) and a double by senior infielder Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) were the only Shepherd hits.

Alyssa Dobbs went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to pace Shippensburg in the nightcap. Heather Chantiles added three hits and a pair of RBIs, while Wedell contributed two hits and two runs.

Shepherd got singles from sophomores Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS), April Przygocki (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) and Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS).

Senior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) (5 Ks, 5 BB) took the loss, while Danielle Shields (10 Ks, 1 BB) gained the win for Shippensburg.

Shepherd falls to 9-12, while Shippensburg improves to 14-9. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, Virginia.
