SHEPHERD SOFTBALL DROPS PAIR AT WV WESLEYAN TOURNAMENT
SALEM, Va. -- Shepherd University dropped a pair of games in softball action at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, Virginia on Sunday. The Rams dropped a 7-2 game to Mercyhurst and a 7-3 decision to Kutztown.
Mercyhurst broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the sixth inning to gain the win. The Lakers smacked four singles and took advantage of two Rams errors in the rally.
Melissa Rizzo led the Lakers with a pair of hits, including a double.
Junior Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) went 3-for-4 and sophomore April Przygocki (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) added a 2-for-3 outing to pace the Rams.
Laker reliever Brittany Strier picked up the win, while starter Rebekah Walsh (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) took the loss.
Kutztown scored seven runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-3 win over Shepherd in the final game. A three-run homer by Ashley Fitzgerald in the second sealed the win for the Golden Bears. Kristen Morrison added a pair of hits.
Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Rams.
Rachel Weidelsaul picked up the win, while Zappacosta suffered the loss.
Shepherd falls to 10-16 on the year. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Columbia Union for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
