PRINCETON, WV -- Sophomore third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh School) and junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) of the Shepherd University softball team were recently honored by the West Virginia Conference. Zappacosta was selected as WVIAC Softball Player of the Week, while Burnette garnered WVIAC Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week honors.
Six of Zappacosta's seven hits last week accounted for extra bases. The sophomore walloped five doubles and a triple as the Rams went 6-0. She also accounted for eight runs batted in and six runs scored.
Burnette fired a pair of shutouts against Columbia Union and Glenville State. She fanned 12 in a one-hitter versus Columbia Union and added six more strikeouts in the whitewashing of Glenville State. Burnette shared weekly honors with West Virginia Wesleyan's Brittany Sphar.
