SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH OHIO VALLEY

VIENNA, W.Va. -- Shepherd University split with Ohio Valley in WVIAC softball action at Ohio Valley on Sunday. Shepherd breezed to a 9-0 win in game one, while Ohio Valley took a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one when senior shortstop Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/ Berkeley Springs HS) singled home senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS), who reached base on a single. A sacrifice fly off the bat of senior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) scored the other run.

The Rams extended their lead to 3-0 in the second when freshman outfielder Rae Johnson (Stafford, VA/ Colonial Forge HS) walked and later scored on a single by freshman catcher Amanda Orkoskey (Wheeling, WV/Wheeling Central HS).

Shepherd sealed the win with six runs in the sixth as they took advantage of error, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch en route to the six-run outburst.

Junior pitcher Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh School) went the distance to gain the win for the Rams. Lena Messina took the loss for the Lady Scots.

Shepherd scored its only run of the game in the nightcap in the fourth when freshman second baseman Rebekah Walsh (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) singled and later scored on an RBI-single by Jenn Canby.

Angie Brown gained the win for Ohio Valley. Senior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS), who fanned 11 and walked five, took the loss for the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 21-23 overall, 10-8 in WVIAC action, while Ohio Valley is now 8-31, 3-21. The Rams are back in action on Monday when they travel to Glenville State for a noon doubleheader.
