SHEPHERD SWEEPS OHIO VALLEY

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd University swept Ohio Valley in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd on Friday. The Rams rallied for a 6-3 win in game one and gained the sweep with an 18-3 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth in game one, Shepherd plated four runs on five hits to rally for the win. Junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) smacked a two-run single, while junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) and sophomore third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) each had an RBI-double to highlight the inning.

Zappacosta went 2-for-2 and Small went 2-for-4 to pace the Rams.

Coty Marcum led the Lady Scots with a 2-for-4 outing with a pair of runs scored.

Ram reliever Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) allowed only one hit over the final three innings to improve to 4-0 on the year. Shannon Kave took the loss for Ohio Valley.

Shepherd took advantage of seven Ohio Valley errors in the 18-3 triumph in the nightcap.

Megan Zahnow and freshman shortstop Charla Wacker (Sterling, VA/Broad Run HS) each had a pair of hits for the Rams. Zahnow also scored a team-high four runs. Zappacosta drove in three runs, while Leighty, sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS), and senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/ Martinsburg HS) each drove in a pair of runs.

Marcum was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored for Ohio Valley in the nightcap.

Freshman pitcher Maggie Smith (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) improved to 2-0 on the year with the win, while Lyndsey Johnson suffered the loss for the Lady Scots.

Shepherd improves to 15-7, 9-0 in WVIAC play, while Ohio Valley falls to 2-9, 0-7. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Concord for a noon doubleheader.
