SHEPHERD SWEEPS OHIO VALLEY

VIENNA, WV -- Shepherd University swept Ohio Valley College in WVIAC softball action at Ohio Valley on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams smacked 18 hits en route to a 16-4 win in game one and held on for a 7-6 triumph in the nightcap.

Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) went 4-for-5 with a triple to lead the Rams in game one. Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) added a 3-for-3 effort and scored four runs.

Coty Marcum went 3-for-4 and Jan Rapp added a 2-for-3 performance to lead Ohio Valley.

Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) went the distance to gain her fourth win of the year. Jessi Waldo took the loss for the Lady Scots.

Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) went 2-for-3 and Kelly Carpenter (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro HS) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Rams in the nightcap.

Lena Messina was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Ohio Valley. Beth Carico also added a 3-for-4 effort.

Ram rightfielder Jenn Canby drilled a throw to JoJo Small (Old Fields, WV/Frankfort HS) and Small's relay to catcher Kelly Carpenter nailed the would-be tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh to end the game and preserve the win for the Rams.

Megan Hall (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry HS) improved to 5-4 on the year with the win, while Lyndsey Johnson suffered the loss for the Lady Scots.

Shepherd moves to 18-19 overall, 11-6 in WVIAC action, while Ohio Valley falls to 7-27, 1-23. The Rams return home on Thursday when they host WVU-Tech for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader in the regular season home finale.
