SHEPHERD SPLITS WITH MCDANIEL IN SOFTBALL ACTION

WESTMINSTER, MD -- Junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) fired a three-hitter in the nightcap to help Shepherd University split with McDaniel College in softball action at McDaniel on Wednesday. The Rams took a 4-1 decision in the nightcap, while McDaniel gained a 4-1 win in game one.

Shepherd scored four runs on four hits in the first inning in the nightcap win. Junior Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) had an RBI-double, sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) had a sacrifice fly, and freshman Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) added an RBI-single to highlight the inning.

Zahnow, senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS), and freshman catcher Charla Wacker (Sterling, VA/Broad Run HS) each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.

McDaniel scored its lone run in the third when Mary Abrams doubled and later scored on a sacrifice off the bat of Caitlin Burns.

Burnette fanned seven en route to her seventh win of the year. Nichol Moeller took the loss for the Green Terror.

McDaniel used a three-run fourth inning in game one to pull away for a 4-1 win. Two of the three runs were scored with the aid of a Ram infield error.

Shepherd's only tally came in the first when Canby singled and later scored on a single by junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS). Small went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.

Abrams and Karyn Curley led McDaniel with two hits each.

Sophomore pitcher Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) took the loss, while Abrams gained the victory for the Green Terror.

Shepherd moves to 22-12, while McDaniel is now 16-13. The Rams return to action Saturday when they travel to West Liberty for a 1:00 p.m. twinbill.
