SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SWEEPS GLENVILLE STATE

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept Glenville State College in WVIAC softball action at Glenville on Monday. Shepherd earned a 3-2 win in game one and gained the sweep with a 2-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the third inning of game one when junior third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh School) smacked a two-run single and sophomore infielder Jodie Sites (Moorefield, WV Moorefield HS/Potomac State) added an RBI-single.

Glenville State rallied in the bottom of the third with solo homers from Jessica Gilchrist and Meagan James.

Shepherd was led by senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) and and Zappacosta with 2-for-4 efforts at the plate.

Freshman pitcher Rebekah Walsh (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) improved to 6-1 with the win for the Rams. Senior Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) tossed the final 1.1 innings to pick up the save. Samantha Stewart took the loss for the Pioneers.

Shepherd scored the game's only runs in the fourth when senior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA./Herndon HS) singled and sophomore catcher Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) followed with a two-run blast for her fourth round-tripper of the year.

Small and senior infielder Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/ Berkeley Springs HS) had two hits apiece to pace the Rams in the nightcap.

Shepherd improves to 23-23 overall, 12-8 in WVIAC action, while Glenville State drops to 5-27, 4-18. The Rams are back in action on Saturday when they host West Liberty for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
