RAMS SWEEP HOME OPENER AGAINST GLENVILLE

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept Glenville State College in softball action at Shepherd on Friday. The Rams earned a 5-2 win in game one and junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) tossed a three-hitter in a 8-0 win in five innings in the nightcap to give the Rams the sweep.

Freshman outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning of game one to give the Rams a 3-2 lead. Freshman third baseman Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) added a solo blast in the sixth and senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) tripled home freshman outfielder Bridget Merceruio (Falling Waters, WV/Martinsburg HS), who had walked, for the game's final runs.

Canby led the Rams at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance.

Megan James went 2-for-3 to pace the Pioneers.

Sophomore pitcher Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh School) fanned four and evened her record at 2-2. Amanda Wayne took the loss for Glenville.

Griffin, freshman outfielder April Przygocki (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS), and freshman shortstop Charla Wacker (Sterling, VA/Broad Run HS) each had two hits to lead the Rams in the nightcap. Griffin belted her second round-tripper of the day with a solo blast in the fifth.

Crystal Marvain went 2-for-3 to lead the Pioneers.

Burnette struck out six and scattered three hits en route to her third win of the year. Jessica Sacra suffered the loss for the Pioneers.

Shepherd improves to 8-5, 2-0 in WVIAC action, while Glenville State falls to 3-21, 3-5. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Bluefield State for a noon doubleheader.
