FAIRMONT STATE TAKES PAIR FROM SHEPHERD IN SOFTBALL ACTION

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Fairmont State swept a doubleheader from Shepherd University in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons earned a 5-2 win in game one and cruised to an 8-0 win in the nightcap.

Fairmont State used six hits to plate five runs in the third inning in game one. A two-run single by Julie Bolyard, and RBI-single by Tara Black, and an RBI-double from Erica Glance highlighted the inning.

Shepherd plated two runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2. Senior shortstop Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) walked with the bases loaded to score freshman outfielder Rae Johnson (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge HS) and freshman catcher Amanda Orkoskey (Wheeling WV/Wheeling Central HS) belted a sacrifice fly to score sophomore outfielder Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS).

Kari Childers, Glance, and Bolyard each had a pair of hits to lead the Falcons. Former Martinsburg High standout Lauren Yurish went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Sims led the Rams with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate.

Fairmont State reliever Alyssa Childers gained the win, while Ram starter Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) went the distance to take the loss for the Rams.

Heather Shutler tossed a three-hitter to lead the Falcons in the nightcap. Burnette took the loss for the Rams.

Kristy Rausch and Tara Black each had two hits and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Falcons attack. Tara Lewis added two hits and scored two runs.

Junior third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS), junior outfielder Meghan Sparrow (Potomac Falls, VA/Potomac Falls HS), and Zahnow all singled for the Rams.

Shepherd falls to 20-22, 9-7 in WVIAC play, while Fairmont State improves to 24-18, 15-5. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Salem International for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
