SHEPHERD DROPS PAIR AT FAIRMONT

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State University swept Shepherd University in WVIAC softball action at Fairmont on Sunday. The Falcons edged Shepherd, 1-0, in game one and took a 7-4 decision in the nightcap to gain the sweep.

Erica Glance led off the bottom of the seventh inning in game one with a walk-off homer to lift Fairmont to victory. It was one of only three hits in the game for the Falcons.

Jessica Greathouse fired a one-hitter to pick up the win, while junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) suffered the loss. Greathouse had nine strikeouts, while Burnette fanned five.

Sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) singled in the seventh for Shepherd's only hit.

Jessica Greathouse and Sheena Zbosnik each smacked two-run homers to lead the Falcons to a 7-4 win in the nightcap. Tara Black and Kari Childers each added a pair of hits.

Junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) and junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) had two hits each to lead the Rams.

Sophomore pitcher Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) took the loss, while Abby West picked up the win for Fairmont.

Shepherd completes regular season play at 22-14, 15-6 in conference action, while Fairmont State is now 19-11, 14-4. The Rams return to action on Thursday at the WVIAC Tournament in Vienna.
