Karen Burnette recorded five strikeouts in Shepherd's 2-1 win over Fairmont State.

SHEPHERD SWEEPS FAIRMONT

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV--Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) singled home Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) with a full count and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Shepherd to a 2-1 win over Fairmont State in game one in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Rams completed the sweep with an 8-0 win in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a1-0 lead in game one in the fourth inning when Kelly Carpenter (Waynesboro, PA/ Waynesboro HS) walked and scored on a double off the bat of Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS).

Fairmont tied the game in the seventh when Brandis Trickett led off the inning with a double. Becky Brown followed with another double to score pinch runner Tara Lewis.

Zahnow stroked a single to left field with two outs in the eighth. She stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher to set up Small's game-winning hit.

Jo Jo Small (Old Fields, WV/Frankfort HS), Leighty, and Small each had a pair of hits to pace the Rams in game one.

Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) scattered four hits and recorded five strikeouts to gain the win. Jessica Greathouse fanned seven in a losing cause for the Falcons.

The Rams pounded out 14 hits en route to an 8-0 triumph in the nightcap.

Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) went 3-for-4 with a three-run triple and scored three times to lead the Rams. Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) was 4-for-4, while Carpenter added a pair of hits.

Zappacosta tossed a two-hitter to even her record at 3-3. Abby West took the loss for Fairmont.

Shepherd improves to 7-10, 6-0 in conference play, while Fairmont State falls to 6-13, 2-2. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host conference power West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
