RAMS SPLIT WITH FAIRMONT

The Rams celebrate their hard fought win in game one.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. --Shepherd College and Fairmont State split in doubleheader softball action at Shepherd on Sunday afternoon. The Rams earned a 1-0 win in game one, while Fairmont took a 9-5 decision in the nightcap.

The first game was a pitching duel between Shepherd's Christee Anderson (Martinsburg/Kearneysville, WV) and Fairmont's Becca Kostival.

Shepherd scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning. Jessica Sturgill (North Harford/Whiteford, MD) led off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Shea Sirbaugh (Berkeley Springs/Berkeley Springs, WV). Sturgill then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on another passed ball.

Anderson allowed only three hits and recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts. Kostival allowed only four hits in a losing cause for the Falcons.

Fairmont scored eight runs in the first two innings to move out to commanding 8-1 lead in the nightcap. Fairmont added a run in the fourth to take a 9-1 advantage.

Chrissy Ashley (Loudoun Valley/Lovettsville, VA) smacked a two-run double to highlight a three-run fourth inning as the Rams cut the lead to 9-4.

Shepherd tallied the game's final run in the fifth when Angie Jeffries (Fauquier (FCC)/The Plains, VA) singled and later scored on Sirbaugh's RBI-single.

Falcon starter Abby West gained the win, while Becky Porter (James Buchanan/Chambersburg, PA) suffered the loss.

Carrie Williams and Denisha Wilson each had three hits to lead the Falcons. Ashley, Jeffries, and Sirbaugh had two hits apiece to pace the Rams.

Shepherd moves to 12-13, 8-8 in WVIAC play, while the Falcons are now 12-8, 7-1. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Columbia Union for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Charlotte Prather Field in Martinsburg.
