SHEPHERD SWEEPS DAVIS AND ELKINS IN SOFTBALL ACTION

ELKINS, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept Davis & Elkins in WVIAC softball action in Elkins on Sunday. The Rams earned a 7-0 shutout win in game one and rallied for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

Shepherd scored all seven runs in the sixth inning to gain the win in game one.

Sophomore third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) led the Rams with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) and freshman Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) each added 2-for-2 outings.

Junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) tossed a two-hitter and fanned six as she picked up her sixth win of the year. Carrie Egress took the loss for the Senators.

Jenn Canby added a 3-for-4 effort in the nightcap. Junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) went 2-for-4 with a double and a homer, while Mia Zappacosta also added a 2-for-4 outing. Sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) was also 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.

Ram reliever Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) gained the win, while Carrie Egress again suffered the loss. for Davis & Elkins.

Shepherd moves to 21-11, 15-4 in WVIAC play. The Rams return to action Wednesday when they travel to McDaniel College for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill.
