SHEPHERD SWEEPS DAVIS & ELKINS IN CONFERENCE OPENER

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV--Shepherd College swept Davis & Elkins in the conference opener for both teams in softball action here on Thursday. The Rams won game one with an 11-3 triumph in five innings and took the nightcap with a 4-1 victory.

Shepherd plated seven runs in the first inning of game one to take a 7-1 lead A two-run double by Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) and a two-run single from Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) highlighted the big inning.

The Senators cut the Ram lead to 8-3 in the third on an RBI-single by Julie Calef and an RBI-double by Carrie McKinney. Shepherd added single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth to gain the early win. Erika Nagy (Damascus, MD/ Damsacus HS) doubled home Canby in the fifth to end the game.

Nagy, Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS), and Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) each had a pair of hits to lead the Rams.

Zappacosta struck out eight and allowed only one walk to gain the win. Carrie Egress took the loss.

The Senators took a 1-0 in the first inning of the nightcap when Jeanette Fauth walked, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a single from Julie Calef.

Shepherd took advantage of two Davis & Elkins errors in the second to tie the game at 1-1. Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) reached second base on a Senator miscue, stole third and scored on an infield error.

Shepherd scored three runs on four singles in the third to earn the win. Sherpf, Jo Jo Small, and Canby all singled and later scored.

Sherpf led the Rams with a 3-for-3 effort in the nightcap, while Zappacosta was 2-for-3. Calef had two hits to lead Davis & Elkins.

Megan Hall (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry HS) tossed a three-hitter and recorded seven strikeouts to gain her first win of the year, while Egress took the loss for the Senators.

Shepherd improves to 3-10, 2-0 in conference play, while Davis & Elkins falls to 3-7, 0-2. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Charleston for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
