SHEPHERD SOFTBALL SWEEPS COLUMBIA UNION

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University swept Columbia Union in softball doubleheader action at Shepherd on Wednesday afternoon. Shepherd took a 13-4 decision in five innings in game one and gained the sweep with a 9-6 triumph in the nightcap.

Senior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) went 4-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored, and a pair of RBIs to lead a 14-hit attack for the Rams in game one. Junior third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) and freshman outfielder Rae Johnson (Stafford, VA/ Colonial Forge HS) each added a pair of hits, while sophomore April Przygocki (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) and senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) each contributed three RBIs.

Janelle Mrakovich hit a pair of home runs and drove in all four runs for the Pioneers.

Senior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) improved to 8-5 with the win in game one. Mrakovich took the loss for Columbia Union.

Senior shortstop Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs, WV) and Zappacosta each ahd a pair of hits to pace the Rams in the nightcap. Eight different player smacked hits for Shepherd in the contest.

Sarah Gaffney went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Columbia Union. Mrakovich added a two-run homer for her third round-tripper of the day.

Freshman pitcher Rebekah Walsh (Wyomissing, PA/Holy Name HS) improved to 5-1 on the year with the complete game win in the nightcap. Sarah Gaffney took the loss for the Pioneers.

Shepherd improves to 18-18, while Columbia Union drops to 2-14. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Concord for a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
