SHEPHERD SWEEPS COLUMBIA UNION

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV--Shepherd College swept Columbia Union in softball action at Shepherd on Tuesday afternoon. The Rams took a 7-1 win in game one and gained the sweep with a 7-0 decision in the nightcap.

Columbia Union took a 1-0 lead in the game one in the first inning when Sarah Gaffney singled, moved to second on a ground out, stole third, and scored on a passed ball.

Shepherd tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame when Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) reached base on an error, moved to second on a double play, and scored on successive passed balls.

JoJo Small (Old Fields, WV/Frankfort HS) went 2-for-4 with an RBI lo lead the Rams.

Gaffney went 2-for-3 to lead Columbia Union.

Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) (2-4) recorded eight strikeouts and picked up her third win of the year for the Rams. Alise Ondersma suffered the loss for the Pioneers.

Megan Hall (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry HS) tossed a one-hitter in the nightcap. Hall also recorded nine strikeouts in the shutout victory. Sarah Gaffney fanned eight in a losing cause for the Pioneers.

Small added a pair of hits in the nightcap to lead Shepherd. Canby belted a two-run triple to key a six-run rally in the sixth.

Angie Long singled in the fifth inning for Columbia Union's only hit.

Shepherd improves to 11-12 overall, while Columbia Union falls to 6-19. The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament in Salem, Virginia.
