RAMS TAKE TWO FROM COLUMBIA UNION
TAKOMA PARK, Md. -- Shepherd University swept Columbia Union in softball action at Columbia Union on Tuesday. The Rams pounded out 13 hits in a 14-6 win in game one and junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/ Tabb HS) tossed a one-hitter in a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
Sophomore third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh School) and junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) each had three hits to pace the Rams in game one. Zappacosta drove in three runs, while Small drove in two. Sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Freshman outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) belted a two-run homer and junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) added a pair of hits.
Sarah Gaffney went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Pioneers.
Ram starter Megan Hall (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry HS) gained her first win of the year, while Gaffney took the loss for Columbia Union.
Junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) fanned 12 and tossed a one-hitter in a 7-0 triumph for the Rams in the nightcap. Gaffney again suffered the loss for the Pioneers.
Megan Zahnow smacked a solo homer and freshman shortstop Charla Wacker (Sterling, VA/Broad Run HS) added a two-run triple to lead the Rams.
Shepherd improves to 6-5, while Columbia Union falls to 1-14. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Fairmont State for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
