RED-HOT RAMS SWEEP CONCORD

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Shepherd University swept Concord in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Rams posted an 8-0 win in five innings in game one and added an 11-1 victory in five innings in the nightcap. The Rams have won 17 of their last 19 games.

Sophomore pitcher Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) tossed a one-hitter in game one to even her record at 3-3. Zappacosta fanned five and did not allow a walk. Ashley Jackson took the loss for the Lady Lions.

Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/ Martinsburg HS) and freshman third baseman Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) each went 2-for-3 drove in a pair of runs in game one. Sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) also added a pair of RBIs.

Stacy Miller singled in the fourth inning for Concord's only hit.

Canby and junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) each went 3-for-3 for the Rams in the nightcap. Canby also scored three times. Junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS), freshman shortstop Charla Wacker (Sterling, VA/Broad Run HS), and freshman outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/ Martinsburg HS) led the Rams with a pair of RBIs. Griffin smacked her team-best fifth home run of the season with a two-run blast that highlighted a 10-run third inning for the Rams. Zappacosta and Wacker each went 2-for-3.

Miller led Concord in the nightcap with a 2-for-3 effort. She scored Concord's lone tally of the day when she doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lindsey Michaux in the first.

Ram pitcher Stephanie Sims went the distance to improve to 3-1. She struck out three and allowed only one walk. Laura Canton suffered the loss for Concord.

Shepherd improves to 17-7, 11-0 in WVIAC play, while Concord drops to 4-14, 1-11. The Rams return to action on Sunday when they host Salem International for a 1:00 p.m. twinbill.
