RAMS SWEEP BLUEFIELD STATE; WIN TENTH STRAIGHT GAME

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 7-6 win in the nightcap to gain a sweep over Bluefield State College in softball action at Shepherd on Saturday. The Rams took game one with a 6-0 triumph.

Freshman outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) belted a three-run triple in the seventh and advanced home on an error by the catcher to score the game-winning run.

Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) led the Rams in the nightcap with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored.

Nicole Resta and Jessica Driver each had two hits to pace the Lady Blues. Liz Ruberg added a three-run triple.

Freshman pitcher Maggie Smith (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) tossed the final two innings for the Rams and gained her first collegiate win. Kim Potts took the loss for Bluefield.

Sophomore pitcher Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) tossed a three-hitter in game one to improve to 2-0. Potts took the loss for Bluefield.

Junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) led the Rams in game with a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored. Freshman third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) added a two-run double.

Meaghan Koehler was 2-for-3 for the Lady Blues.

Shepherd improves to 10-5, 4-0 in WVIAC action. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Columbia Union for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
