RAMS SWEEP BLUEFIELD STATE

ATHENS, WV -- Shepherd University swept Bluefield State in WVIAC softball doubleheader action at Concord on Sunday afternoon. The Rams gained a 7-5 win in game one, and took a 13-3 victory in five innings in the nightcap.

Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Rams in the opener. Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS), Kelly Carpenter (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro, HS), and Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) each added a pair of hits.

Meaghan Koehler went 2-for-4 and Amber Bradley was 1-for-3 with a home run to lead Bluefield State.

Zappacosta improved to 9-5 with the win, while Kim Potts suffered the loss for the Lady Blues.

Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in to pace the Rams in the nightcap. Erika Nagy (Damascus, MD/Damascus HS) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) also posted a 2-for-3 outing.

Leighty and Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) combined for a two-hitter for the Rams. Leighty upped her record to 4-3 with the win. Jessica Driver took the loss.

Shepherd improves to 23-20 overall, 16-7 in WVIAC action. The Rams await word on seeding for the WVIAC Tournament which begins on Thursday in Vienna.
