RAMS TAKE TWO FROM BARTON

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Shepherd University earned a pair of wins from Barton College in softball action at the Snowbird Tournament at Myrtle Beach. Shepherd edged the Bulldogs, 3-2, in the first game and took the second game with a 4-0 triumph.

Shepherd plated three runs in the third inning and hung on for the one-run win in game one.

Freshman shortstop Charla Wacker (Sterling, VA/Broad Run HS) led off with a double and sophomore catcher Julie Scherpf (Berkeley Springs, WV/Berkeley Springs HS) followed with a single. The pair scored when freshman outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) reached base on a three-base error. Freshman outfielder April Przygocki (Frederick, MD/Frederick HS) scored Grffin on a ground out.

Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) and sophomore third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh School) also added hits for the Rams.

Freshman starter Stephanie Sims (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg HS) scattered four hits to gain her first collegiate victory. Jessica Mitchell suffered the loss for Barton.

Junior Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) tossed a four-hit shutout in game two to pick up her first win of the year. Jordan Nesbitt took the loss for the Bulldogs.

Shepherd broke a scoreless tie in the third when Wacker led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Zappacosta, and scored on an RBI-triple off the bat of junior second baseman Megan Zahnow (Berkeley Springs/Berkeley Springs HS).

The Rams added three more runs in the fourth to complete the scoring. Junior first baseman Brooke Small (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) led off with a double and scored on a single by Griffin. Freshman outfielder Bridget Merceruio (Falling Waters, WV/Martinsburg HS) followed with a two-run inside-the-park home run.

Shepherd improves to 2-5 on the season. The Rams return to tournament action on Tuesday morning.
