SHEPHERD TRIO GAINS ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS VIENNA, WV-- Three members of the Shepherd University softball team were selected to the 2004 All-WVIAC Softball Team today. Freshman pitcher/third baseman Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) was a first team selection. Zappacosta led the Rams with a .440 batting average. She also set new Shepherd single season mark for hits (62) and doubles (17). Zappacosta also recorded a 9-5 regular season mark with a 2.29 ERA. She is the first Ram to gain first team honors since Vickie McGilton in 2002. Freshman third baseman/pitcher Shannon Leighty (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove HS) and junior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) were honorable mention choices. Leighty was third on the team with a .333 batting average. She was also third on the team in doubles with eight. Leighty also posted a 4-3 mark with a 3.31 ERA as a pitcher. Canby was second on the team with a .343 batting average. She led the team in runs scored (35) and tied for the team lead in home runs (2). Canby gained honorable mention honors for the second straight year. | ||||
