SHEPHERD DROPS PAIR TO ALDERSON-BROADDUS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Casie Waskey tossed a pair of two-hitters to lead Alderson-Broaddus to a doubleheader sweep of Shepherd University in WVIAC softball action at Shepherd on Thursday. The Battlers won game one with an 8-0 win in five innings and took a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.

Mary Ann Thompson went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and three runs scored to pace the Battlers in game one. Kara Newton was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Kes Lowe was 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.

Senior outfielder Jenn Canby (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) and freshman outfielder Jamie Griffin (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg HS) each singled for the Rams.

Junior pitcher Karen Burnette (Yorktown, VA/Tabb HS) took the loss in game one.

Casey Kuhn went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to pace A-B in the nightcap. Her two-run triple keyed a four-run third inning for the Battlers.

Sophomore pitcher Mia Zappacosta (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh HS) went the distance in a losing cause for the Rams in the nightcap. Waskey finished the day with 11 strikeouts.

Shepherd's only hits came on singles by Zappacosta and Griffin.

Shepherd drops to 18-10, 12-3 in WVIAC play, while Alderson-Broaddus improves now 17-7, 14-1. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 1:00 p.m. conference doubleheader.
