HALTER SWEEPS PARKER CLASSIC SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Senior Shepherd University tennis player Tim Halter took three titles at the annual Roger Parker Classic Tennis Tournament. Halter won the men's singles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles titles making him the first player ever to win three events in the history of the tournament, dating back to 1991. Every year the tournament is held over Labor Day weekend and was originally known as the Martinsburg Open. Tournament director Chris Stambaugh has run the tournament since its inception. This year the tournament was re-named the Roger Parker Classic, honoring the retired long-time coach of the Shepherd tennis team. Stambaugh played for Coach Parker from 1987-90. The tournament is not only a sanctioned event of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), but has now become an unofficial tune-up for the Shepherd tennis season. Dozens of Shepherd players, past and present, entered the event. Halter, coming into the 2004-05 season as the Rams' number one player, defeated former Hedgesville standout Brian Clarke 6-2, 7-5 in the final. The two paired together to win the doubles title as well. The team of Halter and Clarke are the West Virginia Conference's defending champion doubles team. On the women's side, Bunker Hill tenth-grader Rochelle Lambert knocked off former Princeton University player Sarah Bowman 6-3, 6-3 to take the women's singles title. |
