SMITH LIFTS SHEPHERD PAST BOBCATS BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Junior forward Richard Smith (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder HS) scored on a penalty kick at the 87:49 mark to lift 22nd-ranked Shepherd University to a 2-1 win over host West Virginia Wesleyan in WVIAC men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. Junior defender Mikus Rubenis (Gulbene, Latvia/Mercersburg Academy) gave the Rams a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 75:07 mark. Adam DeClerico scored on a feed from Kofi Tolbert for the Bobcats to tie the game at 1-1 at the 87:17 mark to set the stage for Smith's heroics. Senior goalkeeper Patrick Quinn (Germantown, MD/Good Counsel HS) had six saves for the Rams. Eric Silbaugh posted six saves for the Bobcats. Shepherd improves to 12-2-1, 3-2-0 in conference action, while West Virginia Wesleyan drops to 5-8-2, 2-2-2. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host Gallaudet for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
