SEVEN RAMS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS PRINCETON, WV --Seven members of the Shepherd College men's soccer team were named to the 2003 All-WVIAC Men's Soccer Team. Sophomore forward Jamie Ritchie (Remington, VA/Liberty HS) and sophomore defender Ian Newman (Kingston, Jamaica) were second team selections. Freshman midfielder Ryan Prosper (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS), freshman defender Mikus Rubenis (Mercersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy), freshman defender Bernard Walters (Kingston, Jamaica), freshman midfielder Richard Smith (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder HS), and sophomore goalkeeper Robert Pence (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge HS) each gained honorable mention honors. Ritchie led the Rams in scoring with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points. He was also the only Ram to garner WVIAC Player of the Week honors this season. Ritchie had three goals and assisted on two others in Shepherd's 5-2 win over Shippensburg. Newman, the team captain, registered four goals for the Rams this season. He was also a very skilled defensive player. Prosper recorded one goal and four assists for nine points this year. He scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 triumph over Columbia Union. Rubenis and Walters were keys on the Shepherd defense that recorded three shutouts. Walters also added a pair of assists, both coming on game-winning goals. Smith tied Newman for second on the team in goals with four this year. Smith scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Lynchburg in the season opener. He also tallied both Shepherd goals in a 2-1 upset win over Gannon. Pence, a sophomore goalkeeper, had a 1.54 goals against average and 107 saves for the Rams this season. He also recorded three shutouts. Shepherd finished the year with a 9-8-3 record for its second straight winning season. |
