13TH-RANKED SHEPHERD TIES SALEM; SALEM ADVANCES ON PENALTY KICKS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University and Salem International University battled to a 2-2 tie in semifinal action of the WVIAC men's soccer tournament at Shepherd on Thursday afternoon.

Shepherd opened the scoring at the 3:58 mark when freshman midfielder Guilherme Fonseca (Guaraja, Brazil/Objetivo School) scored on an assist from senior forward Jamie Ritchie (Remington, VA/Liberty HS).

Salem tied the game at 1-1 when Guillermo Tolaba scored an unassisted tally at the 41:45 mark.

Marvin Huber's unassisted goal at the 45:45 mark gave the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.

Junior forward Richard Smith (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder HS) tied the game at the 85:11 on a feed from Fonseca to force overtime.

Neither team could score in overtime and the Tigers earned the right to advance on penalty kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Pat Quinn (Germantown, MD/Good Counsel HS) had four saves for the Rams. Rob Searcy recorded four saves for the Tigers.

Shepherd moves to 17-2-2, while Salem International goes to 8-8-2. The Tigers advance to the finals on Saturday.
