RAMS DOWN MARS HILL, 3-1

MARS HILL, NC -- Shepherd University downed Mars Hill College, 3-1, in men's soccer action at Mars Hill on Sunday.

Shepherd's Alie Basma (Frederick, MD/Frederick CC) scored the first goal in the match at the 13:09 mark on a rebound.

Scott Nichols tied the match 40 seconds for the later on a cross from Ryan Petrick. The teams went into the locker room at halftime with the score tied at 1-1.

A minute and 37 seconds into the second half, Richard Smith (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder HS) gave the Rams a 2-1 advantage on a pass from Mikus Rubenis (Gulbene, Latvia/Mercersburg Academy). Jamie Ritchie (Remington, VA/Liberty HS) added an insurance goal with an unassisted tally at the 85:54 mark.

Shepherd got eight saves in goal from junior keeper Robert Pence (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge HS), while Justin Scarbrough had five saves for the Lions. Mars Hill outshot Shepherd 16-to-12.

Shepherd moves to 2-0-1 on the season, while Mars Hill falls to 0-3. The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
