SHEPHERD WINS SEASON OPENER

LYNCHBURG, Va.. -- Freshman Jamie Ritchie (Liberty/Remington, VA) scored a pair of goals to lead Shepherd College to a 2-1 win over host Lynchburg College in men's soccer action in the season opener for both schools.

Justin Valpreda scored on a penalty kick in the first half to give the Hornets a 1-0 advantage.

Shepherd tied the game at 1-1 when Richie scored on an assist from Ray Williams (Ashton, MD/Sherwood) at the 50:56 mark. Richie added the game-winner at the 67:57 mark on a cross from Chad Guthrie (Centreville/Centreville, VA).

Ram goalkeeper Pat Quinn (Good Counsel/Germantown, MD) make several key stop down the stretch and finished with eight saves. Lynchburg goalie Daniel Ruch made four stops. The Hornets held a 30-12 shot advantage and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Rams (1-0) return to action on Wednesday when they host Marymount for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
