SHEPHERD UPSETS 23-RANKED LENOIR-RHYNE, 2-1

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Junior forward Richard Smith (Gaithersburg, MD/ Magruder HS) scored a pair of goals to lead Shepherd University to a 2-1 win over Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Bears were ranked 23rd in the latest NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II Poll.

Lenoir-Rhyne took a 1-0 lead in the gamešs first minute when senior forward Alex Maric scored an unassisted tally.

Smith tied the game at 1-1 at the 4:00 mark on assists from senior forward Jamie Ritchie (Remington, VA/Liberty HS) and sophomore midfielder Alie Basma (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson HS/FCC).

Smith scored the game-winner at the 84:04 mark on feeds from freshman midfielder Guilherme Fonseca (Guaraja, Brazil/Objetivo School) and junior midfielder/forward Adam Sperry (Charles Town, WV/Jefferson HS).

Senior goalkeeper Pat Quinn (Germantown, MD/Good Counsel HS) recorded saves for the Rams. Freshman keeper Tom Gott had seven saves for the Bears.

Shepherd improves to 4-0-1, while Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 5-1-1. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

Notes: The win over a ranked opponent was the second one in program history. The previous win was a 5-2 triumph over 21st-ranked Shippensburg in 2003.
