RAMS BLANK CARDINALS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Sophomore forward Richard Smith (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder HS) scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead Shepherd University to a 5-0 win over Catholic University in men's soccer action at Shepherd on Wednesday afternoon.

Smith gave the Rams a 1-0 lead with an unassisted tally at the 7:00 mark. The Rams took a 2-0 advantage into the break when sophomore midfielder JJ Flores (Woodbridge, VA/ Gar-Field HS) scored on a feed from sophomore defender Mikus Rubenis (Gulbene, Latvia/Mercersburg Academy) at the 25:00 mark.

Junior forward Jamie Ritchie (Remington, VA/ Liberty HS) gave the Rams a 3-0 lead at the 55:00 mark with an assist from Smith.

The Rams completed the scoring on a pair of late goals. Junior forward Pat Quinn (Germantown, MD/Good Counsel HS) scored on a feed from sophomore midfielder Dan Merold (Oakton, VA/Oakton HS) at the 70:00 mark and junior forward/midfielder Donald Fon (Silver Spring, MD/ Montgomery Blair HS) finished the scoring with an assist from Smith at the 76:00 mark.

Ram goalie Robert Pence (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge HS) recorded three saves in a shutout effort, while Cardinal keepers Evan Phillips (7) and Joe Schettino (2) combined for nine saves.

Shepherd improves to 9-3-4, while Catholic falls to 6-9-0. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Alderson-Broaddus for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
