MEROLD LEAD RAMS PAST CATHOLIC

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Junior midfielder Dan Merold (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton HS) scored a goal and assisted on another to lead Shepherd University to a 3-1 win over host Catholic University on Sunday afternoon.

Catholic took a 1-0 lead at the 41:02 mark when Bryan Seifarth scored with an assist from Khoi Phan.

Shepherd tied the game at 1-1 when junior defender Bernard Walters (Waterford, Jamaica/Camperdown) scored on an assist from Merold.

Merold gave the Rams a 2-1 lead at the 62:15 mark on a feed from junior forward Nathan Tobler (Lucketts, VA/Loudoun County HS).

Sophomore midfielder Ali Basma (Frederick, MD/Thomas Johnson HS/FCC) added an unassisted tally at the 67:39 mark for the game's final goal.

Senior Robert Pence (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge HS) had two saves in goal for the Rams, while Joe Schettino had five saves for the Cardinals.

Shepherd improves to 6-1-1, while Catholic falls to 2-4-1. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Wheeling Jesuit for a 1:00 p.m. conference matchup.
