SHEPHERD HOLDS OFF PITT-GREENSBURG
SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Junior forward Danley Shank (Pond Bank, PA/Chambersburg HS) scored a game-high 21 points to lead Shepherd University to a 70-62 win over Pitt-Greensburg in men's basketball action on Tuesday night at the Butcher Athletic Center.
Shank hit on 8-of-15 field goals and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Junior guard Chad Myers (Vinton, VA/ Hargarve Military Academy) added 12 points, while junior forward Darren Stackhouse (Alexandria, VA/Garrett CC) added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Thomas Carr (Toledo, OH/Hargrave Military Academy) dished out a game-high six assists to go along with four points and four rebounds.
In a game that featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties, Shepherd pulled away in the game's final minutes. With only a 66-62 lead, Stackhouse scored a layup on a feed from Shank with 1:23 left in the game to give the Rams a four point advantage. Freshman Yves Moliva (Cameroon/Southeast (NE) CC) and Myers each connected on a pair of free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Clint Mullen led the Bobcats with 15 points. Kevin Conlon added 14, while David Winfrey had 13. Nate Watkins contributed nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Shepherd improves to 2-1, while Pitt-Greensburg falls to 1-2. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Chester for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
NOTES: Chad Myers had his consecutive free throw streak come to an end tonight. Myers drained 32 straight free throws to set a new Shepherd record. Myers' mark eclipses the old record of 30 shared by Bobby Chuey (1988-89) and Dave Russell (1974-75). Pitt-Greensburg head coach Marcus Kahn was an assistant coach under Ken Tyler at Shepherd in 2001-02.
