HEWITT LIFTS UC PAST SHEPHERD
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Jay Hewitt hit a jump shot with nine seconds remaining to lift University of Charleston to a 60-59 win over Shepherd University in WVIAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday. Robert Strickland blocked Danley Shank's (Pond Bank, PA/Chambersburg HS) shot in the game's final seconds to preserve the win.
Hewitt and Richard Hampton led the Golden Eagles with 12 points each. Hampton also hauled down eight rebounds. Brandon Dunbar added 11 points.
Shank scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Rams. Junior guard Chad Myers (Vinton, VA/Hargrave Military Academy) added 11 points, while sophomore guard Yves Moliva (Cameroon/Southeast (NE) CC) had 10 points and tied Hampton for game-high rebounding honors with eight boards.
Shepherd had a 30-27 advantage at halftime behind 11 first half points by Shank. The second half was was a hard fought battle with 15 lead changes and eight ties. Shepherd took a 59-58 lead with 1:21 left on a pair of free throws by Shank to set the stage for Hewitt's game-winning shot.
Shepherd falls to 6-11 overall, 4-4 in WVIAC play, while Charleston improves to 10-4, 5-2. The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Bluefield State for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
