SHEPHERD UPSETS UC IN OVERTIME CHARLESTON, WV --Mark Jennings (Glen Burnie, MD/North County HS/Hagerstown CC) scored a career and game-high 44 points to lead Shepherd College to a 99-97 overtime win over University of Charleston in WVIAC men's basketball action at Charleston on Saturday. Danley Shank (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg HS) drove the length of the floor for a layup and added a free throw with 5.1 seconds left to lift the Rams to victory. Carl Edwards, who led the Golden Eagles with 32 points, scored with 10 seconds remaining to put Charleston ahead, 97-96, to set the stage for Shank's game-winning play. Jennings connected on 16-of-20 shots, including 6-of-7 from three-point range. Shank and Chad Myers (Vinton, VA/Hargrave Military Academy) added 17 points each. Ross Mitchell (Yorktown, VA/York HS) added 11 points and a dished out seven assists. Ben Fordham added 17 points for Charleston and Brandon Dunbar had 15. Anthony Thomas hauled down a game-high 16 rebounds. The triumph over Charleston was the first for the Rams since the 1996-1997 season. Shepherd improves to 8-7 overall, 5-3 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles fall to 11-5, 4-4. The Rams will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Pitt-Johnstown for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference contest. |
