SHEPHERD UPSETS STATE, 69-66

Mark Jennings keyed Shepherd's upset win over State with a game-high 18 points

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Mark Jennings (North County (Hagerstown CC)/Glen Burnie, MD) scored a game-high 18 points to lead Shepherd College to a 69-66 upset win over West Virginia State in WVIAC men's basketball action on Monday night at the Butcher Athletic Center.

State tied the game at 66-66 on a pair of free throws by Christopher Dunn with 1:45 left in the game. Shepherd went ahead, 68-66, with 43 seconds remaining on a pair of Keith Fanjoy (Hammond (Howard CC)/Columbia, MD) free throws. Kevin Newsome (Archbishop Carroll/Washington, DC) hit 1-of-2 free throws with 16 seconds left, and a desperation three-point attempt by State's Mike Taylor with three seconds left missed as Shepherd held on for the win.

Jennings hit on 8-of-15 shots and also had six rebounds. Newsome and Fanjoy each added 11 points, while Dorian Sims (Reading Central Catholic/Reading, PA) tallied 10 for Shepherd (7-12, 4-7). Fanjoy also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Newsome contributed five assists and four steals.

Dunn led West Virginia State (11-8, 6-4) with 13 points. Dondre Williams added 12 points and Dermayne Bullock had 10.

The Rams return to action on Thursday when they travel to Ohio Valley for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
