RALEIGH, NC -- Saint Augustine's improved to 6-0 on the year with a 79-54 win over Shepherd College in men's college basketball action at Saint Augustine's.
Saint Augustine's used a strong first half assault to pull away from the Rams. The Falcons shot over 50 percent in the first stanza while holding Shepherd to a 30 percent shooting effort en route to a 38-17 lead at the break.
Kevin Newsome (Archbishop Carroll/Washington, DC) led the Rams with 11 points with a perfect shooting performance. Newsome was 4-for-4 from the field, including 1-for-1 from three-point range. He was also 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Newsome also dished out a team-high five assists. Shannon Layton (Martinsburg (Potomac State)/Charles Town, WV) added nine points while Keith Fanjoy (Hammond(Howard CC)/Columbia, MD) scored eight points and had six rebounds. Phil Stewart (Heights School/New Carrollton, MD) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Saint Augustine's was led by Desmond Peoples with 27 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for the Falcons were Patrick Pope with 13 points and Corey Evans with 11.
Shepherd now 3-3, will return to action on December 22 when they travel to Bowie State for a 2:00 p.m. contest. The game was originally scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
