HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- J.R. VanHoose scored 21 points and Tamar Slay added 17 to lead Marshall University to a 96-46 win over Shepherd in men's basketball action at Marshall.
Ryan Jones (Banneker/Washington, DC) scored a team-high 18 points for the Rams on an 8-of-17 shooting performance with a 2-for-4 effort from charity stripe. Shannon Layton (Martinsburg (Potomac State)/Charles Town, WV) and Ron Rheinhardt (Archbishop Carroll/Bowie, MD) each added eight points for the Rams.
All five starters for the Thundering Herd hit for double figures as Enoch Bunch recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists, Latece Williams added 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Ronny Dawn also added 11 points.
Marshall connected on 38-of-66 shots for a 57.6 field goal percentage, while holding the Rams to an 18-of-57 shooting performance for a 31.6 field goal percentage. The Thundering Herd only outrebounded the Rams by a 37 to 35 margin.
Marshall improves to 1-3 on the year, while Shepherd falls to 0-2.
The Rams returns to action on Thursday when they host Columbia Union for an 8:00 p.m. contest in the home opener for the Rams. All fans will be admitted to the game free of charge on Free Admission Night sponsored by the Shepherd College Alumni Association.
