FAIRMONT EDGES SHEPHERD
FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Chris McRae scored 22 points and JaMar Wesley added 21 to lead Fairmont State to a 70-61 win over Shepherd University in WVIAC men's basketball action at Fairmont on Saturday.
Terry McCleveland added 13 points and six rebounds, while Marvin Rashad had seven points and a game-high 10 boards for the Falcons.
Four Rams starters hit for double figures led by an 11-point effort by junior forward Danley Shank (Pond Bank, PA/Chambersburg HS). Junior forward Darren Stackhouse (Alexandria, VA/Garrett CC), sophomore guard Yves Moliva (Cameroon/Southeast (NE) CC) and freshman guard Thomas Carr (Toledo, OH/ Hargrave Military Academy) each had 10. Stackhouse also hauled down a team-high six rebounds.
The two teams were tied at the half at 27-27. The second half was a seesaw battle that featured seven lead changes and two ties. Shepherd rallied to within four points at 57-53 at the 6:18 mark on a jumper by Shank, but the Falcons closed the game on a 13-8 run -- fueled by an 8-of-12 performance at the free throw line -- to capture the win.
Shepherd falls to 4-10 overall, 2-3 in WVIAC play, while Fairmont State improves to 10-2, 3-1. The Rams return to action on Monday when they host Alderson-Broaddus for an 8:00 p.m. contest.
