RICHMOND, KY -- Shawn Fields scored a game-high 26 points to lead Division I Eastern Kentucky University to a 78-55 win over Shepherd College in men's college basketball action at McBrayer Arena on Saturday night.
Fields connected on 9-of-13 shots to post his second straight game of 20 points or more. Jon Bentley added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Colonels.
Mark Jennings (North County (Hagerstown CC)/Glen Burnie, MD) scored a team-high 21 points for the Rams. He hit on 6-of-11 shots from the floor and drained 8-of-12 free throws. Phil Stewart (The Heights School/New Carrolton, MD) came off the bench to add 11 points and Darrick Sesker (Gwynn Park/ Upper Marlboro, MD) chipped in with eight points. Keith Fanjoy (Hammond (Howard CC)/Columbia, MD) tied Bentley for game-high rebounding honors with nine. Kevin Newsome (Archbishop Carroll/Washington, DC) recorded six points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
The Rams played well in the first half, leading throughout most of the game's first 10 minutes. The early success was fueled by an 11-point outburst from Jennings. Shepherd's final lead of the game (15-14) came with 10:35 left in the half on a Jennings' field goal. The Colonels finished the half on a 24-6 run to take control of the game with a 38-21 advantage at the break.
Shepherd falls to 3-2, while Eastern Kentucky improves to 4-1. The Rams return to action on December 19 when they travel to Pittsburgh-Johnstown for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
