SHEPHERD MEN'S BASKETBALL ANNOUNCES AWARD WINNERS, CAPTAINS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV -- Shepherd University head men's basketball coach Ken Tyler recently anounced several award winners at the annual team banquet. Team captains for the 2005-06 season were also announced.

Walk-on sophomore guard George Gosk (Falling Waters, WV/Hedgesville HS) was named the recipient of the Mark Palmer Award for Leadership and Commitment. The award is named after former Shepherd All-American Mark Palmer. Palmer, a member of the Shepherd Athletic Hall of Fame, was a standout for the Rams from 1980-84.

Co-winners of the Bobby Chuey Most Improved Player Award were junior guard Chad Myers (Vinton, VA/Hargrave Military Academy) and freshman guard Thomas Carr (Toledo, OH/Hargrave Military Academy). The award is named after former Ram great Bobby Chuey. Chuey, also a member of the Shepherd Athletic Hall of Fame, excelled for the Rams from 1985-89.

Myers led the Rams in three-point shooting with 52 treys in 128 attempts for a .406 mark. He also topped the Rams in free throw percentage by connecting on 52-of-55 shots from the charity stripe for a .945 mark. Myers set a new school mark for consecutive free throws with 37. Despite only starting in eight games, Myers was third on the team in scoring with a 10.0 average.

Carr worked his way into the starting lineup and led the Rams in assists (3.9 apg) and tied for the team lead in steals (48). One of the team's top three-point threats, Carr drained 20 treys on the season.

Junior forward Danley Shank (Pond Bank, PA/Chambersburg, PA) earned the Dave Russell Most Valuable Player Award. The award is named after the late Shepherd all-time great Dave Russell. Russell's 2,757 career points are the most in program history.

Shank led the Rams in scoring with a 20.4 average and tied for the team lead in steals (48). A two-time second team All-WVIAC selection, Shank was second on the team in three pointers (42), blocked shots (23), assists (1.8 apg), and rebounds (4.8 rpg).

Shank, Carr, and Darren Stackhouse (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield HS/Garrett CC) have been chosen as team captains for the 2005-06 season.
