SHEPHERD FALLS TO BATTLERS IN QUARTERFINALS

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV --Stephen Dye scored a game-high 27 points to lead Alderson-Broaddus to an 85-72 win over Shepherd College in quarterfinal action of the WVIAC Men's Basketball Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Alderson-Broaddus had only a 34-32 lead at the half. The Rams led by as many as three points in the second stanza with their last lead coming at the 12:21 mark at 49-47 on a jumper by Mark Jennings (Glen Burnie, MD/North County HS/Hagerstown CC). A three-pointer by Ross Mitchell (Yorktown, VA/ York HS) at the 6:22 mark cut the deficit to three points at 62-59, but the Rams would get no closer.

Danley Shank (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg HS) led the Rams with 22 points, while Jennings poured in 21. Mitchell added 14 points and four assists off the bench, while Brady Catlett (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville HS/New Hampshire) tied Jennings for team-high rebounding honors with seven rebounds.

Derrick Bell added 19 points for the Battlers. Mike Tucker had 18, while Josh Allen added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Shepherd completes its season at 17-11, while Alderson-Broaddus (23-6) advances to the semifinals. The Rams finished with a winning season for the first time since the 1993-94 season. The 17-11 mark is the best finish for the Rams since the 1992-93 team posted a 19-8 mark.

Notes: Mark Jennings is just the sixth player in school history to reach the 1,000 point plateau in only two seasons and only the second player in SC history to score 500 points or more in his first two seasons. He completes his career ranked 21st on the SC all-time scoring list with 1,151 career points and ties former teammate Kevin Newsome for 38th on the all-time rebounding list with 346 career rebounds.
