Alex Herbert rushed 32 times for 108 yards and three touchdowns in Shepherd's 40-24 win over Fairmont State.

(SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV) -- Senior running back Alex Herbert (Monrovia, MD/Urbana HS) rushed 32 times for 108 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 40-24 win over Fairmont State University at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

The Rams moved out to a 7-0 lead with 11:21 left in the first quarter on a one-yard plunge by Herbert. Herbert scored on a five-yard run at the 8:26 mark of the first quarter to give the Rams a 14-0 lead.

The Falcons cut the lead to 14-7 when quarterback Marlon Burnette connected with wide receiver Kyle Scherich on a 28-yard scoring play with 1:19 left in the first quarter.

Shepherd senior quarterback Leonard Ferguson (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar HS) teamed with senior wide receiver Jesse Correll (Port Republic, MD/Calvert HS) on a 99-yard scoring play with 11:31 left in the second quarter to increase the lead to 21-7. The play is the longest touchdown pass/reception in program history. It eclipses the old mark of 90 yards set (Don Tapley-to-Mike Chase) in 1984.

Fairmont got to within 21-13 when Wendell Johnson scored on a five-yard run with 6:16 left in the half. Tyler Bailey nailed a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the half to make it a 21-16 Ram lead.

Sophomore kicker Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem HS) connected on a 21-yard field goal to give Shepherd a 24-16 lead with 8:00 left in the third quarter. Schmitt added a 20-yard field goal with 10:53 left in the fourth quarter to increase the Shepherd lead to 27-16.

The Falcons cut the lead to 27-24 when Burnette teamed with senior wide receiver Khalid Dover on a four yard scoring play. The duo also combined on the two-point conversion play.

Herbert scored his third touchdown of the day with 1:28 left in the game to seal the win. Senior outside linebacker Ron Frazier (Gaithersburg, MD/ Gaithersburg HS) picked off a Burnette pass at midfield, slipped and regained his balance, and raced 50 yards for a scored to put an exclamation point on the Ram victory.

Johnson rushed 39 times for a game and career-high 201 yards for Fairmont.

Ferguson completed 10-of-23 passes for 223 yards for the Rams with a touchdown and an interception, while Burnett completed 12-of-27 passes for 143 yards for Fairmont. He tossed for two scores and had five passes picked off.

Fredy Del Villar (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley HS) recorded a game-high 10 tackles for the Rams. Matt Vance and Tony Alpy each had nine stops to lead the Falcons.

Shepherd improves to 1-3, 1-0 in WVIAC action, while Fairmont State falls to 1-3, 0-1. The Rams will travel to West Virginia State next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. conference matchup.
