SHEPHERD DOWNS VIRGINIA STATE, 24-6; CATER GAINS 150TH CAREER WIN

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Junior quarterback Dan Chlebowski (Greencastle, PA Greencastle-Antrim HS) completed 18-of-26 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 24-6 win over Virginia State in football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. The win gives Ram head coach Monte Cater his 150th career victory.

Shepherd opened the scoring on a two-yard pass from Chlebowski to sophomore running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, Md/Calvert HS/WV State) with 9:05 left in the second quarter.

Minutes later Chlebowski teamed with junior wide receiver Rodney Jackson (Severn, MD/Meade HS) on an 11-yard scoring strike to up the Rams lead to 14-0.

The Rams took a 17-0 advantage into the break when junior Ricky Schmitt (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem HS) kicked a 41-yard field goal with 2:11 left in the half.

The Trojans cut the lead to 17-6 on a four-yard run by Ricky Brown with 8:36 left in the third quarter. Musa Conteh's point after attempt was blocked by senior Dan Gallagher (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin HS).

Junior running back Bryan Wright (Augusta, WV/Hampshire HS/WVU), who ran for a game-high 90 yards on 23 carries, scored for the Rams on a one-yard plunge with 8:07 left in the fourth quarter for the game's final tally.

Michael Terry completed 14-of-29 passes for 132 for Virginia State. P.J. Berry hauled in 13 catches for 83 yards, while Ricky Brown paced the ground game with 43 yards on 17 carries.

Jackson led the Ram receiving corps with five catches for 106 yards.

Senior linebacker Jeremy Bailey (Culpeper, VA/Culpeper HS) led the Ram defense with nine tackles, while junior linebacker Todd Edmondson (Finskburg, MD/Westminster HS) added eight stops. Dewayne Taylor had nine tackles to lead Virginia State.

Shepherd moves to 1-0 on the year, while Virginia State falls to 0-1. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they host Shippensburg University at 1:00 P.M. at Ram Stadium.

Notes: Pete Yurish, a 13-year veteran on the Ram football staff, coached in his final game for the Rams this season. Yurish, the Shepherd special teams guru, has resigned to take a position with the University of Maryland strength and conditioning program. He will work primarily with the men's basketball program.
