SHEPHERD BLANKS CHARLESTON; CATER TIES WVIAC WIN MARK

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- Sophomore running back Dervon Wallace (Lusby, Md/Calvert HS/WV State) rushed 26 times for a career-high 179 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd University to a 27-0 win over University of Charleston in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. The Ram victory placed Shepherd head coach Monte Cater in a tie with former Fairmont State head coach Deacon Duvall as the all-time winningest football coach in WVIAC history with his 125th win at Shepherd.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead with 1:42 left in the first quarter on an eight-yard touchdown run by redshirt-freshman running back C.J. King (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills HS).

The Rams took a 14-0 lead into intermission when Wallace scored on a 34-yard jaunt with 1:18 left in the half. The score was set up by an interception by junior Bobby Jarvis (Richmond, VA/Hermitage HS).

Shepherd sealed the win with a pair of fourth quarter scores. Wallace scored on an eight-yard run with 14:52 left in the game to up the Ram lead to 21-0. He later danced through the Charleston defense for a 25-yard score with 11 seconds left in the game. Charleston's Jason Wilson blocked the extra point attempt.

Redshirt-freshman quarterback Tyler Lazear (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman HS) completed 5-of-11 passes for 72 yards for the Rams in the sloppy field conditions. Corey Isner completed 25-of-30 passes for 164 to lead the Golden Eagles.

Junior wide receiver Rodney Jackson (Severn, MD/Meade HS) had two catches for 46 yards to lead the Rams receivers. Blake Burr hauled in nine receptions for 43 yards to pace Charleston.

Shepherd limited UC to 158 yards of total offense. The Golden Eagles were held to minus 15 rushing yards.

Junior linebacker Todd Edmondson (Finksburg, MD/Westminster HS) led the Rams defense with 11 tackles (six solo). Vincent Tweed had 11 tackles with seven solo stops to lead the Golden Eagles.

Shepherd moves to 7-0 on the year, 4-0 in WVIAC action, while University of Charleston falls to 4-3, 3-2. The Rams return to action next Saturday when they travel to Concord for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
